I just finished watching a news story about a woman who lost the entire contents of her condo unit to a fire. The cause? Batteries! She had been storing her batteries together in a container in her pantry, like most of us do!
My Daughter participated in a 'Battery Challenge' last year at school and it wasn't until then, that I learned that improper battery storage could lead to fire! Batteries, whether new or old, carry a lot of energy and when they come in contact with other metals, can arc and cause a spark, which therefore leads to fire.
According to the Duracell website, you should be storing the batteries in the original packaging until you're needing to use them. Batteries are packaged in a certain manor for safety reasons. I can honestly say that I have batteries lying around in a drawer....with paperclips, push pins, etc. As organized as I am, my junk drawer is something that I don't keep up very well. Most people store their batteries the same way...in a drawer or cupboard until they need to use them.
In addition to new battery storage, many of us use a container or bag to throw our used batteries in until recycling them is an option. This is apparently very dangerous!! If you don't have the original packaging to place them back into, Placing electrical tape on the ends is another option.
