Hi there!! As most of you already know....I'm really trying to take a more natural and healthy approach to life. One thing that I feel really strongly about is the food that we eat. I wash all fruits and veggies really well before consuming them as the pesticides that are used on them, worry me. While rinsing with water will get rid of some germs and bacteria...it really isn't enough.
Here are a few different options for DIY fruit and veggie washes. They're simple and effective ways to make sure that the food you're eating is clean and clear of harmful toxins!
1) Simple Veggie/Fruit Wash
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 2 tbsp distilled white vinegar
- 1 cup of cold tap water
- 2 drops of lemon essential oil
Add all ingredients in a spray bottle, shake well and spray on your produce. Rinse well with tap water before cooking or eating.
2) Leafy Green Wash
- 1 cup of distilled white vinegar
- 3 cups of cold tap water
Mix your vinegar and water in a bowl and allow your greens to soak for about 2 minutes. Rinse them well before serving. Leafy greens are more likely to be contaminated than any other form of produce, which is why it is a good idea to rinse them well before consuming.
3) All-Purpose Germ Killer
- 1 spray bottle full of undiluted white vinegar
- 1 spray bottle full of hydrogen peroxide
Spray your food first with the vinegar and then with the hydrogen peroxide. Rinse thoroughly.
While I have never actually done this...you can use this spray on raw meat to kill E.coli, Listeria and salmonella bacteria. You can also use the mixture to disinfect your counter tops. Alternatively, you can spray the vinegar and then hydrogen peroxide on a surface and let it dry. Don't rinse it or wipe the surface down afterwards.
Certified organics are the best foods that you can buy to avoid toxic chemicals, but I know that is not always an option. Hell....I don't buy organic all of the time. Let's be honest....they're pricey. The next best option is to wash your foods well before you serve and eat them.
Give it a try!!
