Prepping to Declutter, Organize and Purge

Hi there! If you're reading this....it's likely because you legitimately want to make some organizational improvements in your life. There is never a wrong time to start decluttering your space. Clutter can cause feelings of stress, anxiety and can leave people feel helpless and lost on where to start. Sifting through years upon years of accumulation can be an incredible challenge and people often become very overwhelmed. It's not a easy feat, but so rewarding when it is done!

*Here is some advice from my experiences over the last couple of years:

1) Though you may have a hard time letting items go, ask yourself these questions. "When was the last time I have used this item?" "Do I see myself using this in the next few months?" "How many of these items do I own?" "How many of these items do I need?" "Am I able to pass this item on to a family member or friend who may get immediate use out of it?" The object is to be able to let go!!

2) One room at a time! No need to bounce from room to room. Doing this may make your feel more anxious than you may already feel. If you find an object that belongs in a different room, simply place it in that room and go back to the room where you were originally working in. Once you have sorted, organized, purged and cleaned one room, you can make plans to move on to the next.

3) If you're working through your bedroom or children's bedrooms....do laundry first. Make sure that all of your clothing are clean and in their respective rooms before starting to purge and organize. That way you have everything in front of you and know what you're working with.

4) Don't expect miracles. Think of what you have accumulated over your life. It has taken years! Sorting through it all and deciding on what you should keep, donate or throw out will take some time. Pat yourself on the back for every task that you complete!

5) Buy small baskets, glass jars, labels, trays, boxes, etc. These will help with small items in your kitchen, bathroom, bedside tables, etc.

6) Bring out the vacuum and dusting items. With sorting through all of your items, comes dust bunnies and the discovery of other little surprises!! Cleaning is another aspect of decluttering that may people don't think about.

7) Respect what others may want to keep or what may be sentimental for them. Explain to your family what your intent is with your organizational project and have them work with you to sort through their items.

8) Once you've finally decluttered and organized your home, get the whole family on board to stick with a plan to keep it neat, tidy and clutter-free!

As I mentioned....this process takes time and can be stressful. Look at the big picture and stick to the task at hand. You've got this!!! Trust me!
